HeyUtho

An Android alarm you can only turn off by doing math

HeyUtho is an alarm clock with no snooze button. When it rings, you have to solve three quick math problems in a row before it goes quiet, and one wrong answer sends you back to the start. By the time you've done the math, you're awake. It's free and open source, with no ads and no account, and everything stays on your phone. The name is Bengali: "utho" means "wake up".

Why I built it

My friend Sajib kept hitting snooze half-asleep and missing his mornings, so he started building an alarm that makes your brain do a little work first. He had the core idea running; I jumped in to help turn it into something people would actually want to install, with a cleaner look, a proper name, and releases that ship themselves instead of being built by hand.

My role

Contributor. I did the blue Material 3 redesign, the HeyUtho rebrand and icon, a time-picker fix, and the automated release pipeline. The original app is by Sajib (@SajibAhmedNls).

How it fits together

5 layers

  1. 01Compose UI (single activity)
  2. 02ViewModel (MVVM)
  3. 03Repository + Room database
  4. 04AlarmManager exact scheduling
  5. 05Ringing service in its own process

Key features

  • Solve 3 math problems in a row to stop the alarm; a wrong answer resets the streak
  • Keeps ringing even if you swipe the app away
  • Back and volume buttons are blocked while it rings
  • Shows over the lock screen and turns the display on
  • Alarms come back on their own after a restart
  • Repeat on any days, with labels and per-alarm vibration
  • Light and dark themes, with an always-dark ringing screen
  • Signed APK released automatically once CI passes

Built with

  • Kotlin
  • Jetpack Compose
  • Material 3
  • Room
  • Coroutines & StateFlow
  • AlarmManager
  • Foreground services
  • GitHub Actions

প্রশ্নব্যাংক · Question Bank

Every SSC and HSC board question, sorted so you can find it in seconds

An Android and iPhone app that brings past board questions from all 11 education boards of Bangladesh into one place, from 2015 to 2025, across 66 SSC and HSC subjects. Pick a subject, board and year and the full paper opens, or revise chapter by chapter and see which questions keep coming back. It works offline with no login. The current beta ships with sample questions in the real board format, clearly marked in the app, while the full paper set is added.

GridOptima

Turns an operator's plain-English notes into the cheapest valid 24-hour campus energy plan

My entry for the BUP CSE Fest 2026 hackathon's Smart Campus Energy Optimization Challenge. A campus runs on solar panels, a battery and the grid, and operators leave notes like "keep at least 40% in the battery overnight". GridOptima reads those notes with a language model, checks every rule it extracts with deterministic guardrails, then solves for the minimum-cost hour-by-hour schedule and replays it to prove it's valid before answering.
