GridOptima

Turns an operator's plain-English notes into the cheapest valid 24-hour campus energy plan

My entry for the BUP CSE Fest 2026 hackathon's Smart Campus Energy Optimization Challenge. A campus runs on solar panels, a battery and the grid, and operators leave notes like "keep at least 40% in the battery overnight". GridOptima reads those notes with a language model, checks every rule it extracts with deterministic guardrails, then solves for the minimum-cost hour-by-hour schedule and replays it to prove it's valid before answering.

Why I built it

Language models are good at understanding what an operator means, but you can't trust them with the math. So the model does only that one job. Everything after it is plain, deterministic code, so the same input always gives the same, checkable answer.

My role

Sole developer: API, LLM pipeline, optimizer, verifier and operations console.

How it fits together

5 layers

  1. 01LLM interpretation (Gemini, OpenAI, Groq, Claude or Ollama)
  2. 02Deterministic guardrails with a repair pass
  3. 03Linear-program optimizer with a hand-written simplex solver
  4. 04Hour-by-hour replay verifier
  5. 05Operations console

Key features

  • Reads free-text operator notes and turns them into exact directives
  • Guardrails reject bad model output and re-ask only for those notes
  • Finds the provably cheapest valid 24-hour schedule
  • Simplex solver written from scratch, no optimisation library
  • Replay verifier checks the plan the same way the judges do
  • Browser console with hand-drawn SVG charts and an accessible table view
  • Clean JSON errors that never leak keys, prompts or stack traces
  • Ships as a Docker image on FrankenPHP

Built with

  • Laravel 13
  • PHP 8.3
  • Gemini API
  • Linear programming
  • Tailwind CSS 4
  • Vite
  • Docker
  • FrankenPHP
  • PHPUnit

A newsletter and blog platform with a proper admin dashboard behind it

A Laravel platform that combines a public site, where people read posts and subscribe, with an admin dashboard for writing, sending and replying. Newsletters are written in a rich-text editor, tested on yourself first, then sent through a background queue. Contact messages become support tickets you can answer by email from the dashboard.
